I always wonder what causes my house to be very dusty when I often make time to clean my house. I wipe all the dust off the fan blades almost every other day, and also on most surfaces in the house but it easily gets thickly sludgy in between normal dusting cycles.

No matter how much I vacuum or clean, the house is always dusty. I have tried all the ways to get rid of dust like vacuum cleaners, air cleaners, I also always ask every single person that comes into my house to take off their shoes. I wash my dog often to thinking that it could be a culprit but still does not work at all.

What Causes Excessive Dust In A House?

If you will look for the meaning of dust in the dictionary, you will find that dust is composed of fine materials; also our skin sheds some dead cells so it is inevitable to have a dust free environment. Also factors like pets, and external causes like if you are living near the highways or in sandy places.

  • No time for cleaning. Busy people tend to neglect house cleaning because they usually prefer to rest if they have free time. This badly causes dirt and dust to accumulate excessively making cleaning more difficult. It could have been a lot easier if cleaned regularly.
  • Living creature inside the house. Everyone one who lives in the house is considered as contributor of dust. Because every living creature constantly produces new cells and drop dead cells. Some of these cells drain when you take a bath and some stay and fall off throughout the day. Hair strands also add to dust likewise waste from insects.
  • Fibers.  Furniture inside your home also creates dust like couches, bed linens and carpets. You also have to clean your closet regularly because cloth is made of fiber which could accumulate dust? Materials that begin to deteriorate also create tiny particles that form dust. These stuffs produce big bunches of fragments also called dust bunnies.
  • Bathroom and Kitchen Tacks. Things like flour, dried food residues, paper towels and toilet paper also contributes as dust. Spores from molds and other fungi that grow on rotten food and damp surfaces also become dust.
  • Air filter port. If air filter port is not sealed air tight, it could cause the air to get really dry in the winter and the dusty attic air into the system will blow inside the house.
  • Disturbed Soil. Dirt can easily form as a cloud of dust. It can be airborne and can transport anywhere on an air current. If your house is near an area of mining, farming, construction or any work where earth is disturbed, your house are most likely to develop more dust. Even animals digging for food creating a nest can disturb soil and create dust.
  • Rocks from space. Small particles of meteoroids that enter the planet’s atmosphere all the time create dust as it impact the surface of the Earth turn to dust. These dusts may also be carried inside your home.
  • Abandoned Areas. Old surface walls create dust as they deteriorate. You can also find more dust in older parts of your home than other areas of the house.  If your house is near to some abandoned buildings, then your house will most likely to easily gets thick dust.

Step 1: Clean From Top To Bottom

Cleaning your house seems to be a simple task, however when you thought of it, where do you even start? Follow a structure of cleaning the whole house from top to bottom rather than room to room so that all the dust that gets stirred up along the way is removed once and for all in one final sweep.

You do not want to vacuum and then get dust all over the floor you are done cleaning. This will not save you more time and energy. It is indeed ideal to start cleaning from top to bottom. Top zones include those mostly-neglected high spots in your home.

It is ideal to start cleaning upper ledges, above cabinets, air vents, ceiling fans, light fixtures, high windows and replace air filters. After the top zone, you can proceed with the mid zone, which includes anything you look at while standing up.

Midzone are the walls, windows and tall furniture. Remove dust in the mid zone by re-hanging curtains, dusting bookshelves, pictures, mirrors, clocks, & other wall hangings.

Last part is the low zone, which are the common parts we clean in the house like bathrooms, furniture and beds. Dust surfaces and furnishings, vacuum, wash and change bed linens.  Do this regularly.

Step 2: Keep Tidy Closets

Closets can be a house of dust if not kept tidy. Remove everything inside your closet then do a deep cleaning. Dusty closet can cause a health issue so make some time to get it cleaned up. Use a damp cloth or a duster or paper towels to wipe the closet clean.

After which you can use a deodorizing and disinfectant spray. Categorize the contents of your closet. Organize and sort your clothes according to preferences and occasions. This will allow you to find the right outfit quickly and as well as maintain the orderliness in the closet.

Clothes must be protected from dust and dirt so wrapping it with a plastic sheet or plastic bag and putting it inside a box might solve the problem. Use moth balls to prevent  insects in going to the closet.

Step 3: Clean The Mattress

Mattress is a household piece that should be carefully cleaned. Regularly cleaning it help lessen dust or allergens in your bedroom and keep it new and fresh for a long time.

Mattress is the receiving end of dead skin cells, sweat, stains, dust and dust mites if not cleaned regularly. Spills should be cleaned urgently to prevent molds from growing. Cleaning mattress is a basic cleaning task. Here are some steps to clean the mattress:

1. Vacuum. After removing the mattress cover, start vacuuming at the top and work your way down in overlying thin paths and then vacuum the sides of your mattress the same way.

2. Freshen. We naturally do not notice our own body odor and  as time passes, sweat can build up and result to stinky odor. To get rid of this, put some baking soda and softly brush it in with a scrub for it to get into the smelly mattress. Let it the baking soda there for ten minutes.

3. Vacuum again. Scrubbing the baking soda into the mattress helped it blend with moistness and body oils in the surface layers of the material. Vacuuming it a second time gets that moisture out including the cause of the odors. This is also to remove certain remaining dust inside the mattress.

4. Remove stains. Mattresses typically get stains like blood, urine, and vomitus. There are basic cleaning ingredients and alternatives available in the kitchen like baking soda that can be used to remove these stains. Never soak your mattress! Just wipe the stained area with a clean damp cloth and scatter with baking soda to counteract the odor and pull out any remaining moisture. Let it dry and vacuum it again.

5. Flip it and repeat the first 4 steps. Coil mattresses should be overturned side-to-side and top-to-bottom weekly for the first three months of ownership, then quarterly after that.

Repeat the above steps on the other side of the mattress as you flip it.

6. Let it Breath. Mattress should be aired out! Maybe like human, it is best for your mattress to get fresh air and sunlight too for it naturally eradicates bacteria. Not everyone can bring their mattress outside but if you can, do it!

7. Cover and Protect. Mattress cover is so important. It serves as a line of defense against future dirt and can be regularly cleaned by just throwing it into a washing machine. It saves more time than doing the whole process of cleaning the mattress every time you see dirt on the surface.

Step 4: Vacuum The Stair Twice A Week

Staircases are usually disregarded places when cleaning houses. We forget that dust can also accumulate on it if not cleaned. Feet leaves mark on it as people constantly go up and down the stairs and on haste. Before you begin, remove large pieces like cartons or paper or other things that can damage vacuum cleaner when its clogged.

Begin with the ends and corners. Detach the large part and replace it with a smaller nozzle. This is because smaller nozzles can reach even the tightest places. Vacuum every part of the stairs start from the bottom to the top.

Make it certain that you have cleaned every area that needs cleaning especially the corners of the stairs. This is where dust settles. Run the vacuum repeatedly on each step until you covered the whole stairs. Vacuum the whole staircase meaning each and every part of it.

Do it in a repeated down-up motion to guarantee that all areas are covered. Use a dense lightweight vacuum cleaner for the stairs. Owing to their bulk and weight, upright vacuum cleaners are difficult to use and doesn’t suit.

Put door mats inside and outside each entrance to keep debris from getting trapped and reduce dust coming into your home. Remember to shake it out from time to time.

You don’t have to wait for Christmas to get rid of dust in your house. Commonly, because of busy lives house cleaning is only done for the time before Christmas. This badly cause dirt and dust accumulation so cleaning is becoming a more difficult to do.

It could have been a lot less complicated if it is scheduled at least once in a week. Setting a regular dust removing schedule saves time, energy and money in the long run. Men and women, especially children are also vulnerable to different microorganisms which can affect their health.

It is bad for anyone, regardless of age to dwell in dirty place, especially children. Young children of crawling age naturally get up whatever on the floor and put it in their mouth.  A dirty house filled with dirt is an entryway to acquire disease.

A clean house clean will keep your children and your whole family healthy. Besides, it is not just hygienic but also beautifully appealing. It builds a pleasant ambiance that can keep your mood pleasant.

A messy and cluttered room on the other hand, will just give you a messy and filthy mind which results to grumpiness and irritability. A neat and clean room always generates positive mood.
